A touch of flair for your floors

Upon selecting the type of wood floors that you would like for your commercial or residential property, our team at Buono's Flooring Co. can help you personalize your floors though the addition of unique design elements and surface finishes.

Flooring design elements

Borders create a frame effect in a particular room or area, and usually contrast to the main area of the room. For example, a simple installation of a medium colored wood such as strip white oak might include a border outlining the room in a contrasting darker species of wood such as Brazilian cherry. The possibilities are endless, and are not limited to wood only. Borders can incorporate multiple wood species, stone, marble, brass, stainless steel, nickel, and other metals.

Flooring surface finishes

  • Oil-modified urethane: a solvent base polyurethane that dries in about 8 – 12 hours. This type of finish ambers. This is the most popular choice for homeowners due to durability and affordability.
  • Water-based urethane: water-based finishes are clear and non-yellowing. They have a milder odor and dry in about 2 – 3 hours. This option is growing in popularity due to environmental concerns. In general, even the best water based finishes are less durable than other finishes. Water-based finish is also more expensive than oil-modified finishes, though people are surprised to learn this. However, most water-based finishes are fortified with aluminum oxide for much needed durability, and this is what makes the finish more expensive.
  • ZERO VOC finish: A waterborne finishing treatment for wood floors that is completely solvent-free. Produced with renewable raw materials, ZERO VOC waterbase is ideal for green building and when applied directly on the wood it leaves the shade unaltered and provides a very natural effect. ZERO VOC is the first finish in the world that has completely eliminated volatile substances.
  • Moisture-cured urethane: a solvent-based polyurethane that is more durable and more moisture resistant than other surface finishes. Moisture-cure urethane comes in non-yellowing and in ambering types and is generally available in satin or gloss. These finishes have an extremely strong odor that pretty much commands evacuation of the home during application and drying.
